When dyeing materials with mushrooms, aluminum sulfate can be used as a mordant on any fiber and will not change the dye's shade. For proteinic fibers, aluminum sulfate can provide an interesting alternative to alum and can be used without cream of tartar. Combined with iron mordants or a final (very light) iron after-bath can also increase the number of shades produced by a dye mushroom.
